Herefords
The
Hereford herd started in October 2008, when we
purchased Rita, April and Lady from a gentleman
that was selling his herd. In May 2009 we
had the opportunity to purchase more cows and
heifers from the same herd, in addition to a
bull that was unrelated to all the females we
had, except Lady. The new additions were
April, Katey, Fluff, Puff, and Shorty.
The Herefords
are red and white, which is obviously different
from the black of the Lowlines. We like the
dispositions of the Herefords the best.
Herefords are also known for their mothering
traits and the black baldy (offspring from
crossing a Hereford with a black Angus) mamas
are known to be the best mother cows with the
Angus meat characteristics thrown in.
In
November 2009, all the Herefords, except Lady
and Becky, moved to Jackson, New Jersey, to
their new home with Jeff and Diane Vogel. Lady
and Becky are now for sale, also; see the For
Sale page. We love the "red girls"
but need to downsize our herd a bit and
concentrate more on our Lowlines. Lady and Becky
are top-quality, donor-prospect females that
have never been flushed.

is Nick's cow. Both Becky and Rita are awesome
with Nick, standing stock-still while he goes
around them, pulls their tails, tugs on their
ears, or anything else that a little boy wants
to do. Becky is the one he picked, though, and
he requests to go and pet her on a regular
basis. Becky is bred to our Lowline bull, Power,
and is expected to calve in October or November
2009.

is a classic Hereford, a larger miniature--not near the size of a
commercial Hereford. She has an awesome build
and is very beefy. She had a black baldy bull
calf on 10/1/09 that was out of a neighbor's
bull (the cows were in the pasture less than 2
hours and the neighbor bull came over the fence
to be with them). Lady is the most shy cow out
of the Herefords, but she is not mean, just
doesn't prefer to be in human company.
